Wall Flowers

The instruction for this web site page tells us not to be bashful.  Since I was a "Wall Flower" back at LHS, I've spent the last 50 years trying to get over the hump.  Every time I try to say something worth while, or really important, my mind always reverts back to my favorite quote.  "Why should I speak when there are no ears" -  Albert Einstein.  I wish I could be like Schwabe or Dalby and just talk away.  :-)

Does anyone else remember the standing back flips that Fred would do during gym class?  There are a number of us who are probably a few inches shorter than we might otherwise be because we went home and tried to duplicate Fred's feat.  Bashful my asp!  Fred, you just let your actions speak louder than your words.

Walter,

True story.  Sitting in a bar in Shawneetown, IL back in 1969 I bet a guy who worked with me on the Dredge Ste.Genevieve that I could do 25 hand springs.  I did the 25 and threw in a couple of more just to make sure.  Probably why my body aches all over as I get older.

Not a chance.  Would have to be body rolls, not handsprings.  Probably would not be able to get up again.

Walt, I know what you are thinking. That I was simply a nerd. Yet, I didn't know that I was part of the "Briefcase Gang." The thing is that I was so shy. I don't recall if it was in high school or jr. high, but I was ridiculed by my English teacher for my logical, but "ridiculous" answer to my interpretation of Robert Frost's poem, Road Not Taken. That incident, along with other things, was the final nail in the coffin of my confidence.

From that point on, I never raised my hands in class, never volunteered, and never initiated a conversation for nearly 35 years. Then 20 years ago, next month, I joined Toastmasters. That was a life changing experience for me, much like it had been and continues to be for many others.

Fred, I would certainly encourage you to join Toastmasters, even at our age. It might ignite the magic feeling we lost when we were in HS. Mine dream was teaching or otherwise influencing others to be successful. I wanted to be like Mark Thackary [mispelled] played by Sidney Poitier in To Sir, With Love. Now, after 45 years, I'm doing it.

Talking about wallflowers, so was I. I took ballroom dance lessons at McClernand for 2 years, and I really enjoyed it. Then the songs and dances started to change. Remember the sock hops? I was terrified to dance because it was so different from the ballroom dancing I had learned in grade school. It took me nearly 40 years for ballroom dancing to come back :).

Take care y'all.
