Suzanne Elaine Gifford (Purcell)

Suzae “uz” Elaine Purcell, 83, of Springfield, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.

Suz was born in Grand Island, NE, the daughter of Carolyn and Joe Gifford. After moving to Springfield, she graduated from Lanphier High School in 1961.

After high school, Suz began her career with Illinois Bell Telephone Company, where she worked in various departments for 32 years. She retired in 1994, at the age of 51.

Suz married Ed Purcell in 1985 and he survives. Together, they have three daughters, Angi Courtney (Tom), Teri (Trey) McGhee, and Jenna Smart. Their daughters blessed them with five grandchildren, Haley, Nick, and Ben McGhee, and Brady and Regan Smart.

After retirement, Suz started a successful cake business, which she enjoyed for six years until 2000. That same year, she was blessed with twin grandsons. She spent the next five years babysitting them every other weekday until they started school. She thoroughly enjoyed this experience and had a special bond with all her grandchildren.

Her husband, Ed, retired in 2001. The two enjoyed traveling together, but Suz also wanted to take up golf. They took lessons, played 3-4 times a week and met many new friends as a result. She loved the game of golf.

In her later years, Suz continued to enjoy time with family and friends while maintaining an active lifestyle. She will be remembered for the love she shared with those around her and the special place she held in the hearts of her family.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Carol Westcoat and Marge Regan; and her brother, Jerry Gifford.

She is survived by her sister, Jackie (Rick) Coleman; and her brother, Rod (Debbie) Gifford.
