Springfield - Phillip Kent Smithers, 60, of Springfield died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at St. John's Hospital.

He was born Sept. 13, 1943, in Springfield, the son of John F. and Reva E. Grotts Smithers.

Mr. Smithers was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving with the Seabees.  He worked for Steam Fitters Local 137.

Survivors: three daughters, Dawn (husband, Ed) Morris of Warrensburg, Mo., and Denise (husband, Christopher) Small and Dana Parada, both of Springfield; six grandchildren; a sister, Sigma S. (husband, Ed) Bates of Pleasant Plains; a brother, Gary (wife, Sharon) Smithers of Springfield; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and companion, Pat Sabo of Salisbury.
